venice lagoon
The Venice Lagoon covers an area of more than 500 kms, where many islands are scattered. The Giudecca island, the biggest one, stands like an embassador and helps design the St.Mark's Basin. The delicate balance of the lagoon had to cope with two main enemies (the destructive action of both the Brenta river and the open sea). Acqua alta (high tide) in Venice is a worldly known phenomenon which can be compared to the breath of nature and of the city itself. To a certain extent, acqua alta is a sign of good health: this way the lagoon cleans up itself.
La Giudecca does not usually experience a very high tide, except from the areas very close to the boat stops. Up till now, there's no bridge or underground linking the island to the city historical center: the only way is by sea, so by boat or water taxi. So Giudecca is "twice an island" separated by the Canale della Giudecca (formerly called Canale Vigano). And just like Venice, Giudecca is made up of a number of islands (8)
