Giudecca is a quiet place, but it is not true at all that "nothing happens". Here are a few news, from the island's island. January 2011 - Acqua Alta? Poca, grazie - Giudecca is a special place in Venice, indeed; its position and height on he average sea level has again saved the island from most floods of the season. Like most people reviewing the past year, the historical center of Venice is looking back and counting the occurrences of high tide. In 202 cases, the tide rose over 80 cms; on eighteen occasions, the water was higher than 110; and once it exceeded 140 cms (an exceptional 144 cm on 24 December). It is part of a trend which has been observed since 2008. Normally, there is one daily peak tide and, in the wintertime, this peak is higher than in other seasons and causes expected trouble. The 22nd of November, however, was truly a record day with three peaks over 100 cms: 122 at 12:10 am, 103 at 10:15 am, and 106 at 11:40 pm. The good news is that Giudecca stayed - most times - with dry feet. Courtesy and copyright: VeniceWord
