Hot to get to Giudecca
How to get to Giudecca from the railway station? and from Piazzale Roma? or from the Marco Polo Venice airport? As easy as drinking a glass of water. Your can reach the island from Piazzale Roma and from the railway station: - by public waterbus (vaporetto): Actv lines number 41 or 2 in direction Giudecca (the way back is served by numbers 2 and 42): there are three stops in the island, named: Palanca (the main one), Redentore (near the Redentore Church) and Zitelle. The 4 and 42 waterbusses run every 20 minutes during daytime until 9 pm, the 2 runs all day every 10 minutes and at different frequencies; the "N" line is active in both directions during the night
- private water taxi
The Giudecca island is easily reached from the Zattere stop with the number 2 waterbus; if you only cross the Giudecca canal, that is, if you go from Zattere to Palanca stop or viceversa, you pay half the ticket (ask for a "traghetto" ticket) because it is one stop only From the airport you have two main options:- Alilaguna boat service, running about every half an hour
- provate water taxi
It is highly recommendable to check the timetables on the Actv and Alilaguna websites. For water taxis: ask for the fares in advance (the taxi driver are must show you a written pricing list on request). It is faster to get to Palanca than to St.Mark's, or San Polo, or the Arsenal, or most Venetian locations.
A curious note: a great many of the locals - for historical and psychological reasons - feel like the island is far from reach: it is difficult to cross the canal by a row boat, because of the wave motion; a sort of narrow mindedness causes the Venetians consider stranger (or humble) everything which is not within walk reach. The fear of "crossing the water" is the silliest excuse they can find for being lazy or for not knowing what happens outside the usual boundaries.
