gardens of giudecca
A garden in Venice? Hard to find, though not impossible. Gardens in Giudecca were the rule instead, not the exception, until a few years ago. "I'm sick of all this water, I'm tired of pink and grey, of blue and of red. I thirst for dry land and green trees and shrubs and flowers: a garden. A garden! You know we have asked for one every where; there's no such thing in venice. If there were, what good! Does not the proverb speak of "Venezia, tomba dei fiori"? ("A Garden in Venice" by Federico Eden, London 1903) It was sir Antony Eden's uncle to pursue his dream of owning a garden in Venice, thus building one of the most beautiful and famous gardens in the island of Giudecca A special event dedicated to the gardens of Venice will be held at Giudecca 795 at 18.00 on Sunday 23 October 2011: "Gardens in Flight". A performance between words, sounds and flavors by Mariagrazia Dammicco; clarinet and narrator: Orestes Sabadin; images by Gabriele Kostas.
The performance will take place on the premises of a modern and contemporary art gallery near the former Molino Stucky. For the occasion, the gallery will presented the aerial photos taken by photographer Giampaolo Agostinelli for the book "Venice from Above" (AWD Publisher 2009), sold at a special price for Wigwam members. "Gardens in flight" is a collage of words, music, images and flavors: an imaginary trip on a lagoon in which time compresses and expands, to reveal glimpses of secret and fragile lives. A poetic tale written by Mariagrazia Dammicco, which will be interpreted by the voice and clarinet of Sabadin in a continuous dialogue with the author, in an atmosphere made more exciting by flavors and scents that will be offered to the public. In the background the striking images of the gardens of Berlin photographer Gabriele Kostas. The performance "Gardens in flight" takes its name from the story by Mariagrazia Dammicco published in 2010 in the book "When were the Venetians" (edited by Caterina Falomo, Studio LT2 Venice), which can be purchased.
