andrea palladio
The Italian architect Andrea Palladio (b. Padua, 1508 - d. Maser, Treviso 1580) whose real name was Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, was the designer or the inspirer of several churches and palaces in the Giudecca island. The Redeemer's Church - Chiesa del Redentore, the Chiesa delle Zitelle (and San Giorgio Maggiore in the near San Giorgio Island), all in al line, are among his masterpieces. But his fame is mostly due to the palaces and villas for the aristocracy, mainly in the hillside of Vicenza (which are called in Italian "ville palladiane" after his name). He began to design religious buildings in the 1560s and in 1570 was appointed architectural adviser to the Venetian Republic "Serenissima". The Palladian style, with its harmony of volumes and circles, can be easily recognized.
